Aug 25, 2001 – Sharon Ben-Shalom, 26 of Ofarim was killed when Palestinian gunmen opened fire on their car as they were driving on the Jerusalem-Modi’in road on Saturday night.
Sharon and Yaniv Ben-Shalom were returning home from Jerusalem where they spent Shabbat with Sharon’s parents to their home in Ofarim with their two daughters – Efrat 20 months old and Shahar 8 months old – and with Sharon’s brother. Palestinians opened fire from a passing vehicle, killing Sharon and Yaniv.
Sharon was seated in the back of the car with her two babies and when the terrorists opened fire, she covered them with her body taking the bullets herself and saving their lives. Sharon’s brother Doron Sviri, was fatally injured by a shot to the head and died the following day.
Sharon and Yaniv met at the Ariel College where they studied together and were married three years ago. Sharon Ben-Shalom worked as a medical secretary for Kupat Holim Leumit, but had extended her maternity leave in order to be with her two daughters.
Sharon Ben-Shalom was buried alongside her husband Yaniv in the Segula cemetery in Petah Tikva. She is survived by her parents, two brothers, Noam and Alon and two daughters.
Israel's Voice commitment to memorialize each victim of terror doesn't end here. We are currently reaching out to those who have been victimized and to every family who's lost loved one(s) due to terror. Your story must be told and we intend to create a documentary for each individual. Silence is no longer an option. Contact us today to set up an appointment. firstname.lastname@example.org Our preference is to make your story heard in English, but Hebrew is also fine. Videos will be subtitled for the world to understand.
