Hagai (Haim) Lev

July 10, 2002 – Capt. Hagai (Haim) Lev, 24 of Jerusalem was killed by Palestinian sniper fire while conducting a search for weapons smuggling tunnels in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Capt. Hagai Lev was hit by sniper fire during a large-scale operation on the outskirts of Rafah to uncover tunnels used for smuggling arms into the Gaza Strip from Egypt. At around 7 A.M., as Haggai was patrolling the area with his troops a sniper fired at them from one of the houses. He was hit in the jaw and was taken by helicopter to Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva in critical condition. He died there shortly after arrival.

Hagai, the second of six children born to Shimon and Noa Lev grew up Efrat in the Gush Etzion bloc south of Jerusalem where the family settled 18 years ago. His mother Noa is originally from the US and is an English teacher at the local school. After graduating from high school, Hagai studied at the pre-military yeshiva at Atzmona in Gush Katif. Just a year ago he married Nurit, and the couple lived in Jerusalem.

Hagai had been deputy commander of the Givati Brigade’s reconnaissance unit for one year. Southern Gaza commander Col. Shlomo Dagan described him as a professional, dedicated and thorough officer who was involved in numerous missions to thwart terrorism.

Capt. Haggai Lev was buried in the Mt. Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem. He is survived by his wife Nurit, his parents and five siblings.
