Hafez al-Hafi

Oct 7, 2004 | 22nd of Tishri, 5765 | כ״ב בתשרי תשס״ה

Oct 7, 2004 – Hafez al-Hafi, 39, of Lod was killed in the terror bombing at the Hilton Hotel in Taba – one of two tourist sites in Sinai hit the same night.

At around 22:00, a blast ripped through the Hilton Hotel in the resort town of Taba, near the border with Israel. The powerful blast was caused by car bomb which exploded at the entrance to the hotel, containing an estimated 250-300 kg of explosives, causing the collapse of part of the hotel. At about 23:30, two additional explosions occurred in the camping area of of Ras a-Satan, located about 45 kilometers south.

Hafez al-Hafi was in Taba together with his 7-year-old son, Yusuf. They were in the lobby when the first bomb exploded, lightly wounding Yusuf and trapping him beneath fallen rubble. Hafi was trying to pull his son free when a second explosion killed him instantaneously.

Hafez, an Israeli Arab, worked for a taxi firm in Lod. He had just bought a new villa and was to move within the next few days.

Hafez al-Hafi was buried at the Lod Cemetery following a service in the local mosque. He is survived by his wife Susan, three sons and a daughter.
